God bless you, Mr. Vonnegut

Upon completion of Jailbird, I am officially half way though the novels of Kurt Vonnegut. Every time I pick up one of this man's books it makes me a little more proud of being from Indiana. I know that us being from the same state is overall pretty meaningless, but oh well.
If you haven't done it yet pick up one of these amazing novels. Mom, read Bluebeard while you are recovering from surgery. It is my favorite and it will get you ready to paint again.

Ian, you kinda remind me of myself at about your age. I was a great Vonnegut fan as well. Along with Herman Hesse, Fyodor Dostoevsky, & Jack Kerouac. You reading any of those guys?

What's up with your mom? Nothing serious, I hope? (Silly question, I know. Surgery is always serious. But you know what I mean. There's serious, and then there's SERIOUS).

Narcissus and Goldmund by Hesse is the greatest book ever written and my father got me Siddhartha when I was 13 which led to Demian, Steppenwolf, The Glass Bead Game, and his fairy tales. While all of them were good, they were a bit repetitive.
And I am proud to say that after taking 4 Russian lit courses in college I have made my way through several thousand pages of Dostoevsky and am about to tackle some of his short novels.
As for Kerouac, I used to pretend to like him in high school because my friends did but his writing aggravated me.

Mom is having the surgery I am destined to have one day. Her hands are in a great deal of pain due to having arthritis and being a painter. She should be fine, other than not having use of her hand for a while. I cannot be more specific since I have trouble finding out the details of surgery. I hear the term "cut open" and I have to fight my stomach from fleeing upwards.

Oh, back to books, everyone NEEDS to read What is the What? by Dave Eggers. I cannot really put into words how impressed I was with this book.

Surgery went well except for the nausea afterward. I have advanced arthritis in both thumbs. The surgery was to remove damaged bone and to place a spacer in the joint with couple of screws. I will have a brace for 10 days and a cast after the stitches are out for another 4 weeks. After I'm healed, we will do this again on my left hand. So this artist is out of commission for now. Thanks for asking.
